Pull Apart Pizza Bread

Pizza Pull Apart Bread as Dinner or a Snack

Pizza is one of those universal foods that everyone seems to really love.  Toppings vary widely, but the base of dough, sauce, and cheese brings people together.  Pizza Pull Apart Bread is a great variation on the typical pizza pie, and makes not only a fabulous dinner, but a great appetizer or snack too!  You can adjust the toppings to whatever you love best and make Pizza Pull Apart Bread your very own.  It’s perfect for parties or just a good nosh any time and instead of having a slice, everyone can pull apart the plate of yummy goodness and have fun!

Making Pizza Pull Apart Bread

Pizza Pull Apart Bread is pretty easy to make.  A quick yeast dough is made and let to rest while you brown any meat toppings you choose to use.  My family loves pepperoni and Italian sausage.  If you use a traditional pork pepperoni, cut it up and add it to your sausage as you brown it to get some of the fat out of the pepperoni.  You can also use turkey pepperoni right out of the package if you don’t want to mess with rendering the fat out.  Cheese and your favorite sauce rounds out the rest of the Pizza Pull Apart Bread, and you’ll have a beautiful loaf to serve on your table.

Ingredients

    Dough
  • 1 pkg active dry yeast
  • 1 C warm water
  • 2 ½ C flour (white or wheat, but if using wheat, mix it 50/50 with white flour)
  • 1 t salt
  • 1 t sugar
  • Toppings and Sauce
  • 1 part tomato paste
  • 3 parts pasta sauce
  • Toppings (meats browned and drained)
  • ½ C mozzarella cheese
  • ¼ C Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 450°F.
  2. In a small bowl, place the warm water and yeast. Stir and let sit until foamy.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar.
  4. Slowly add the foamy yeast water to the flour and mix with a wooden spoon until all the flour is incorporated.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and cover with a clean dishtowel for 8-10 minutes.
  6. Oil your hands with vegetable or olive oil and knead the dough a few times until it is elastic. Cut into ¾ to 1 inch balls. Cover with a damp dishtowel and set aside for 5 minutes.
  7. Spray a standard bread pan with nonstick cooking spray.
  8. Layer the dough balls, meat, cheese, and sauce in the pan, mixing them a little to get the balls totally covered in sauce.
  9. Turn the oven down to 400°F and bake the pan for 25-30 minutes, until dough is cooked throughout.
  10. Serve with warmed pizza sauce.

Alternatives with Pizza Pull Apart Bread

If you don’t like making the dough portion of the Pizza Pull Apart Bread, you can always use frozen bread dough.  Allow it to thaw in a gallon size plastic zippy bag and use as you would the homemade dough.  You can also change the toppings to anything you like.  If you like veggies, saute them just a little to release part of the water.  That way, your Pizza Pull Apart Bread won’t be mushy.  You can also use a white sauce or a garlic butter sauce in Pizza Pull Apart Bread to make it a bit different.  Whatever you choose, your Pizza Pull Apart Bread will be loved by all who try it.
